Periodontal Disease, or Gum Disease, is a silent but serious problem. Patients often experience no pain or symptoms; however, more than 45% of adults in the UK are affected by it. Even in its mildest form, it can affect the quality of life. If left untreated, Gum Disease can lead to bad breath, loose and gappy teeth, infections, tooth loss and damage to the bone and soft tissue in your mouth. In fact, many studies link oral health to a number of significant conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, heart health and Diabetes.

Brushing or mouthwash alone does not offer complete protection. However, Gum Disease is highly preventable and, especially in the early stages, quite easily treatable.

Gum diseases are considered by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as one of two significant global burdens of oral disease, with the other being dental decay. Severe Periodontitis is now recognised as being the sixth most prevalent disease of mankind.

The purpose of our many gum treatments is to protect your teeth and smile to last you a lifetime. Gum care will stop the progress of Gum Disease and strengthen your teeth’s support structure.

The science is clear: your gums don't deteriorate with age. Therefore, in most cases, appropriate treatments and your willingness to fight Gum Disease is all it takes to keep your gums and teeth healthy for life.

Stages of Gum Disease

Gum Disease develops when inflammation spreads to the tissues that support the teeth.

Gingivitis

Caused by the sticky white plaque that forms around teeth after brushing; makes gums look red and swollen. There is bleeding when you brush or clean.

Peridontitis

Periodontitis

The plaque destroys the tissues and bone supporting the teeth. Periodontal pockets appear with plaque inside, that cannot be reached by a toothbrush or cleaning aids.

Why do people
avoid treatment?

Many patients do not know that they have Gum Disease. Even if they suspect it, a fear of what the treatment involves prevents them from reaching out for the proper care.

An impactful message from the European Federation of Periodontology.

Our dentists and hygienists work closely together to screen all our patients, even from a young age, for signs of gum problems. All patients are provided with bespoke oral health coaching based on their genetic, social and personal risk factors for the disease, so they are aware of the habits they need to form to avoid Periodontal Disease. We also use evidence-based protocols to help manage the disease when we see any signs of it. Learn more about Hygiene at Geans Dental here.
